about
Patronella Molutsi
Patronella Mocholo is a Principal Engineer for Mobile Equipment at Exxaro Resources, with over 20 years of experience across surface and underground mining operations. While her technical background is in mechanical engineering, her work sits at the critical intersection of engineering, safety leadership, and operational culture in high-risk mining environments.
She brings a cross-disciplinary perspective to mining risk management, with a strong focus on how leadership, systems, and human behaviour influence safety outcomes beyond technical design alone. Her experience includes leading the implementation of technologies such as collision prevention systems, autonomous and digitally enabled operations, and mixed-fleet integration, areas that require alignment between engineering disciplines, operational teams, and risk controls.
Having held MHSA legal appointments, Patronella offers a practitioner’s lens on accountability, decision-making, and the realities of managing risk where infrastructure, equipment, and people interact. She is particularly passionate about moving the industry from compliance-driven approaches to culture-led safety, where ownership, clarity, and leadership consistency drive sustainable performance.
Patronella holds a GCC Mines and Works, an MBA from Wits Business School, a BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering, and executive certifications from MIT. She is currently pursuing an MPhil in Inclusive Innovation at UCT GSB, focusing on translating innovation into practical, inclusive outcomes in complex operational environments.
Her work continues to contribute to safer, more integrated mining systems where engineering excellence and human-centred leadership come together to manage risk effectively.
